Markušovice Manor House

The town of Markušovce, situated some six kilometres from Spišská Nová Ves, is dominated by a beautiful Rococo manor house commissioned by the local yeoman family, the Máriássy family. This manor house now houses a branch of the Spiš Museum, featuring an exhibition of historical furniture from various periods – ranging from Classicism through Biedermeier, Historism to Art Nouveau. In the manor house’s beautiful French garden lies another jewel of Rococo architecture, a small summer palace named Dardanely. This charming residence, built especially for the occasion of hosting Emperor Joseph II, houses another of Spiš Museum’s displays – Slovakia’s sole exhibition of historical keyboard instruments. These musical instruments are also played on concerts of classical music held on a regular basis that are very popular among classical music enthusiasts from Slovakia and from abroad. Apart from Markušovce Manor House and Dardanely, the town offers yet another lordly residence to admire and that is the partly preserved Markušovce Castle. Hikers, even the less capable ones, will appreciate the opportunity to take a hike from the town to a curious rock formation nearby, the eight meters tall Markušovce Rock Mushroom.
