Šášov Castle

Rate it Thanks for rating

Sitting on a rock towering above Hron River, are the charming ruins of Šášov Castle. According to a legend, this castle was built by a baron from the city of Zvolen for his court jester as a token of gratitude for saving his life from a huge bear that attacked him during a hunt. As a part of the hike to the castle, visitors can take part in a learning experience – there is the Ladomerská Vieska – Šášovské Podhradie info trail that starts at the train station in Žiar nad Hronom and ends in Šášov Castle. The castle offers a wonderful view of Hron River valley or of Kremnica and Štiavnica Mountains. Among places the visitors to this area should not miss, is the renaissance-baroque manor house in Žiar nad Hronom. In the mid-nineteenth century Štefan Moyses, a patriotic bishop and the first chairman of Matica Slovenská, used to spend his time here. In the park, adjacent to the manor house, is a memorial dedicated to Moyses.
