St. Egidio Church in Ilija

Rate it Thanks for rating

On the hill above the village Ilija in the heart of Štiavnické Mountains stands a moth-eatenchurch from the 13th century dedicated to St. Egidio, the patron of hermits. The church is an important cultural monument, mainly due to Late Roman richly decorated portal, the oldest in Slovakia. Archaeological research of the late 20th century in the temple revealed a skeleton of a child next to the portal. This discovery was certainly no surprise to experts on Slovak legends who know that the church and the whole village is from the Middle Ages under the protection of a little boy, called the bell boy.
