Fame and importance of Banská Štiavnica was born thanks to its mineral resources mining in the depths of the earth. According to the legend a couple of lizards dusted with gold told the locals what the local hills hide inside. Visitors may even today experience the lure of ancient underground tunnels soaked up by drudgery of former miners. The Slovak Mining Museum opened to the public one of drifts in Banská Štiavnica, which is called Glanzenberg drift. This drift served for dewatering, and later was used for ventilation, transport and going down. Visitors equipped with a helmet, coat and lamp (premises of the drift are not lit up) may experience a guided tour through the 450 m long drift. At the end of the tunnel, at the depth of 30 m, visitor may dig a little piece of ore by using a hammer and chisel.
