For centuries the skyline of ancient Kremnica, an important mining city renowned for minting valuable gold coins, has been dominated by a beautiful castle with a Late Gothic church dedicated to St. Catherine. Kremnica Castle, built on a small hill close to the city’s historical square, is featured in a legend about shrieking peacocks that alerted the citizens and saved Kremnica from Hussites, who were about to climb over the poorly guarded city walls and steal precious gold coins stored in the castle. Nowadays there are no extraordinary treasures stashed away in the castle. But its exhibition of historical coins and medals run by Múzeum mincí a medailí v Kremnici (Museum of Coins and Medals in Kremnica) will satisfy many a curious visitor. Housed in xxx house in xxx square there is yet another numismatic exhibition provided by the same museum. One of its kind in the whole of Slovakia, it is focused on showing the development of Slovak banking industry and medal making. Once one is visiting Kremnica, it is highly advisable to see the famous coin mint that has been in operation for nearly seven hundred years now.
